This is a standard pocket penetrometer manufactured by us here at LabQuip Ltd.
Penetrometers are designed to vertically penetrate soil and provide a quantitative measure of the resistance to said vertical penetration. The pocket penetrometer is no different in this regard. The measurement gives an indication of the compression strength and shear strength of the tested soil.
The compression strength or shear strength of soil could be important to know in a number of different applications. For example when evaluating the foundations of a building, when considering the trafficability of terrain, or when analyzing soil quality for crop growth. The greater the strength of the soil the more traffic it can withstand without degrading or succumbing to erosion. With regards to soil quality for crops, the less compact the soil, the greater the amount of oxygen in the soil, which is beneficial for crop growth.
This pocket penetrometer comes with an in-built gauge. Simply zero the reading prior to use and then read the measurement during soil penetration. The units of measurement are kilogram-force per square centimetre (kgf/cm²).
The small, compact size of this penetrometer means that it is very easily stored and transported. Therefore, it is extremely practical for use in the field.
